Denny Koenders was named publisher of the Sedalia Democrat by Civitas Media LLC., the Democrat’s parent company.
Koenders comes to the Sedalia Democrat from its sister newspaper, the Altus (Oklahoma) Times where he also served as the publisher and general manager. Koenders is a veteran newspaper man who has served as a publisher, general manager, circulation manger, production manager, advertising salesman and print manager since he started in the newspaper business in 1968.
Koenders was born in Haypi, South Dakota, and is a graduate of Bookings High School in Brookings, South Dakota. After graduation, Koenders served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea, Vietnam and Germany.
“My philosophy is that a local newspaper belongs to the communities it serves,” Koenders said. “I want each and every one of you to stop in and visit me at my office.”
Koenders has a long history of community service in which he has served as a past president of the local Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Chamber Foundation Board. He is also a member of the Rotary and the Lions Club, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans Organization.
Koenders has six children, three boys and three girls, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He enjoys jogging, power walking and fishing.
